Why study in Germany?

German universities are among the highest ranking in the world. The guiding principle of the German higher education is ‘Unity of Teaching and Research’. As a consequence, there is strong emphasis on apprenticeship, which ensures practical application of a large part of what a student learns in theory. While doing this, the student is encouraged to research novel ways of problem-solving. The state provides money for the research projects and this enables the student to do their own projects and learn in an actual real-life situation. In Europe, Germany is the most popular destination for international students due to International Degree Programs (IDP) taught in English medium, tuition fee waivers and career opportunities after graduation.

Germany tops the list of the most internationalized countries in the higher education arena. It has a lot to offer with more than 400 state and private universities, and a variety of courses. Over 300,000 foreign students currently study in Germany, of which over 11,860 are Indians. While studying in Germany, students from non-EU countries are allowed to work a total of 120 full or 240 half days per year. In case one works as a research assistant, even this constraint is not there. Germany encourages international academics pursuing programs in Germany to seek employment there.

Different funding models for higher education institutions in Germany.

a) Approximately 60 percent of higher education institutions in Germany are funded by the Federal Government and the federal states, meaning their funding body is the state. The majority of students are enrolled at this type of higher education institution and mostly do not pay tuition fees.
b)  There are also higher education institutions that are state-approved but privately operated. This applies to approximately 30 percent of higher education institutions in Germany. Most of these are universities of applied sciences that are valued for their close ties to industry and their international orientation. Some of them however charge high tuition fees.
c) A further 10 percent of higher education institutions are run by one of the churches in Germany. They are state-approved and often also open to students of other denominations. They usually focus on a specific field such as theology, philosophy, social work or education.
